Some retirement communities offer affordable bargains

When Freida and Warren Schriner were considering a move to a retirement community, they worried the costs would overwhelm their pension and Social Security income.

Fortunately, Warren is a retired traffic manager for the Kansas National Guard, a job that required precision and meticulous record keeping. He kept the same attention to detail on the couple’s household expenses. Once he tallied the monthly upkeep and property taxes on their 2,450-square-foot ranch home in Topeka, Kan., he realized the monthly fees at the retirement community would actually be substantially lower.

So nearly two years ago, the couple put down a deposit and moved into an 1,100-square-foot apartment at a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Topeka
